Vintage Puritan Chased 5 Piece Puritan Chased Sterling Silver Tea Set: Gorham fabricated this pattern in hollowware both with and without chasing. The sets without chasing are absolutely plain and have no surface embellishment and the only decorative elements to enhance the attractive shapes were the lid finials and scroll-work handles. In contrast, the beautiful hand chased pieces have a Jacobean inspired motif that is continuous around all body surfaces and is evidence of the added hours of skilled craftsmanship involved in their creation, which was reflected in the much higher cost when new. Thus the chasing did and does add considerably to the value of the set, not to mention its artistic beauty. There are a few that may still be found today.Currently there is not one like it available for sale anywhere online per a Google search! The Coffee and Tea Pots have reinforced handles and hinged lids. To my knowledge pattern names were not inscribed on any of Gorham's sterling holloware in the 20th C. The marks stamped on the bottom of these pieces are: "Gorham" in classic script, STERLING, the Hallmark with the 3 characters (the Lion, the Anchor, and the G), plus "Hand Chased" and the series Nos. 451 - 1 to 455 -5. This 5 Piece Set Weighs a Total of 1948 grams of. 925 sterling silver and includes. Coffee Pot (reinforced handle and hinged lid): 10 1/2" h x 10 w", 2 3/4 pints, 717 grams, ID 451- 4. Tea Pot (reinforced handle and hinged lid): 9" x 10" h, x 11 w, 2 1/2 pints, 592 grams, ID 452-4. Sugar Bowl (with lid): 6 1/4" h (to top of finial) x 6 1/2" w, 268 grams, ID 453-4. Creamer: 5" h x 5 1/2" w, 5/8 pint, 205 grams, ID 454-4. Waste Bowl: 4 1/4" h x 4 1/2" w, 166 grams, ID 455/5.
Each one has been stored and preserved in an anti-tarnish felt bag for the last several decades. Optional Additions: A decision was made not to include the large Butler's Tray on which Tea Set is displayed in this listing as it unusually large, heavy and very unwildly. A receipt will be provided by shipper to substantiate. It was also manufactured pre-1967 by Gorham, is of the highest quality heavy silver-plate with hand chasing, embossing, repousse etc, and is in fine vintage condition with no scratches, or discolorations. The pattern is Strasbourg YC777, a Rococo inspired one that as seen goes wonderfully well with the Jacobean motif chasing on the tea set.Size: 1.5" tall x 19.5" wide x 27.5 long, and weighs about 15? Additionally, I have a sterling lemon fork, a sugar spoon, and tongs in Reed & Barton Spanish Baroque pattern that are all in mint condition to add as serving accessories if desired. So please carefully scrutinize photos and zoom in on all views. Please also thoroughly review details in description.
However, I feel confident in stating that whomever buys this rare and exquisite Tea Set will not only be pleased that the perfect condition has not been exaggerated, but also that they've gotten a bargain as compared to any other Sellers' non-mint listings --- especially the Big Vendors who specialize in "replacements".
