A Rare Heavy Irish Victorian Hallmarked Sterling Silver 3 piece Tea Set by James Fray. The Teapot is 12 5/8" handle to spout and 6 7/8" in height with a diameter to the body of 8 1/2 and a weight of 29.8 oz or 846 grams. The Sugar Bowl is 5 1/2" in height and 9" handle to handle with a diameter to the body of 6 3/8 and a weight of 16.0 oz or 454 grams. The Cream Jug is 5" in height and 6 5/8" handle to spout with a diameter to the body of 4 1/2 and a weight of 9.5 oz or 270 grams. The Total weight of the entire set being a substantial 55.3 oz or 1,570 grams.
The whole set just says quality to you, every piece has superb Melon shaped design which is matched to each piece standing on 4 Acanthus leaf feet with scrolled work between with each piece having a scrolled "C" shaped handle and triple banded upper rims with the domed hinged lid on the tea pot finished with a superb pumpkin finial with a full gilt finish to both the inside of the cream jug and sugar bowl. The Set looks to have been fully gilded at one time with traces left but would have been stunning and looking like a gold instead of silver tea set (would also help with less polishing needed).The Set is free of any Initials or Monograms. The Set is in Excellent Condition. The Hallmarks to the base are. Town Mark - Hibernia - Dublin. Date Letter - W - 1842. Sterling Mark - Crowned Harp. Duty Mark - Queen Victoria.
