A very fine, hand decorated Gorham sterling silver tea service. In the firm's Maintenon pattern.
The pattern was introduced c1920. Inspired by Marquise de Maintenon, a favorite of King Louis XIV.In tapering ovoid form with center hand carved bead framed rolled edge shield. With twin cornucopia, and trailing floral, in the French Baroque manner. Alternating with inverted bell flower and acanthus streams. Cover retains the original urn an bell crown finial. Ruffled leaf cap spout, rising from bell flower, berry and flower mount. Feathered leaf crown, ribbon edge wrapped, tapering C handle. Atop ribbon, leaf and berry edge stepped base. This Gorham sterling silver Maintenon teapot is 10 inches.
Handle to spout and the set weighs 55 standard ounces. Two pieces with 1923 and one with 1919 date codes, all perfectly match. Teapot interior clean as if little or never used. Handle is secure, retains the original heat stops.
